Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, helps cover the “gaps” in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) — including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are designed to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs, so you can focus on your health instead of medical bills.

If you’re enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, a Medigap plan can give you predictable costs, nationwide coverage, and peace of mind when it comes to medical expenses.

Doctor and Patient

Why Choose a Medicare Supplement Plan?

1. Lower Out-of-Pocket Costs

  • Medigap plans help pay for expenses not covered by Original Medicare, such as hospital stays, doctor visits, and skilled nursing care.

2. Freedom to Choose Your Doctors

  • With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare — no networks, no referrals.

3. Guaranteed Renewability

  • As long as you pay your premium, your Medigap coverage can’t be canceled — even if your health changes.

4. Travel Coverage

  • Many Medigap plans offer emergency coverage while traveling abroad, so you’re protected even outside the U.S.

Popular Medicare Supplement Plan Options

There are several standardized Medigap plans to choose from (labeled A through N). The most popular include:

  • Plan G – The most comprehensive coverage available for new Medicare enrollees. Covers everything Original Medicare doesn’t, except the Part B deductible.

  • Plan N – A lower-premium option that still offers strong coverage, with small copayments for doctor or ER visits.

  • Plan F – Available only to those who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Offers 100% coverage of Medicare-approved costs.

Each plan provides the same benefits nationwide — meaning Plan G from one insurance company offers the same medical coverage as Plan G from another. The only difference is the monthly premium.

Who Should Consider a Medigap Plan?

A Medicare Supplement plan may be right for you if:

  • You want to limit unpredictable medical costs

  • You prefer to keep your own doctors without network restrictions

  • You travel often within or outside the U.S.

  • You don’t want to deal with copays and coinsurance every time you receive care
